Chocolate Chip Bars


2 cups flour sifted
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
3/4 cups butter
1/2 cup sugar
1 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
2 eggs (separated)
1 tbl cold water
1 tsp vanilla extract
6 ozs chocolate chips
1/2 cup nuts

Yield 2 2/3 dozen.
Heat shortening to 375.

Mix and sift flour, salt, and soda.
Cream butter, sugar and 1/2 brown sugar until fluffy. Add egg yolks, water, and vanilla, and mix well. Add sifted ingredients and mix.
Spread dough into a ungreased 9x13 pan. Sprinkle with chocolate chips, pressing them slightly into dough.
Beat egg white until the a peak of egg white will remain standing when the beater is removed. Gradually add the remaining brown sugar and beat until the mix can hold it own shape. Spread over dough. Sprinkle with nuts.
Bake at 375 for 25 minutes.
Cool and cut into bars.
